The formation of botanical composition, phytomass and yield quality of grasslands depending on cutting regime and irrigation. IV. Nitrogen use by alfalfa sward
1996
Lillak, R. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia))
This paper deals with results of investigation into the dependency of total nitrogen (crude protein) content and accumulation in phytomass of alfalfa (Medicago media Mart) cv. 'Jogeva 118' sward on the cutting regime and irrigation under the climatic and soil conditions of the South-Estonian region. The outline of the main results would be as follows: the relationship between cutting regime and total crude protein yield was not consistent. The yield was equally high with the 2- or 3-harvest systems. When the more intensive 4-harvest system was used, the crude protein yield was up to 20 per cent smaller. The irrigation of alfalfa sward resulted in a decrease in the concentration of total N by the accumulation of total N in phytomass by the average of 4 per cent
