The effect of dietary fat addition to sow diets, on the birth weight of the piglets and on their growth rate up to weaning

The effect of dietary fat (soil oil) addition in sow diets on the quality and quantity of milk produced as well as on the rate of growth of piglets up to weaning, was studied. Twelve sows were selected, based on their body weight and parity number, and alloted into three groups. The diets used (A, B and C) were designed to contain 3, 6 and 9% fat, respectively, by the addition of a combination of full fat soya and soy oil. The diets were given to the sows 5 days before the expected date of farrowing and through the lactation period. Up to weaning, at 21 days, the only source of energy and other nutrients for the piglets, was the sows milk. The results of this study showed that addition of fat in the sow diet (5 days before farrowing and through lactation): 1. Significantly improved the weaning weight of piglets when the sow diet contains 9% fat. 2. Significantly improved the weaning weight of piglets, which means a respective increase in milk production by the sows. 3. Did not effect, significantly, the concentration of fat and protein in the sow milk.
