Study for growth rate of foals of Hungarian cold-blooded horses from birth to weaning

Our research was carried out at a domestic horse ranch. Taking into account 6-year averages, birth weight, 180-day weight and weight gain of 88 paternal consanguineous foals (originating from two Hungarian cold-blooded studs) were analysed considering the aspects of genotype, sex and maternal foaling numbers. Between the Hungarian cold-blooded and the crossed paternal consanguineous foals, significant differences (P0.1) in birth weight 13.88 kg (34.52 percent), in 180-day weight 80.46 kg (33.08 percent), and in weight gain 370 g/day (32.80 percent) were found. The following correlations relate to the mares' weight: foals' birth weight (r=0.29 ) foals' 180-day weight (r=0.40); weight gain (r=0.43). The correlation between the foals' birth weight and the 180-day weight is, r=0.89 percent that of weight gain is, r=0.79 percent. The foals' 180-day weight averages 51.03 percent of their dams' weight. On the basis of our examinations, the optimal time for weaning, respectively, and selling Hungarian cold-blooded foals is at the age of six months, weighing 320-330 kg
