Replacing soybean meal with sunflower meal in broiler rations and its effects on the performance of chicks and carcass traits

This experiment was conducted to study the possibilities of replacing soybean meal with sunflower meal (SFM) in broiler diets during growing and finishing periods. All one-day old chicks were fed starter ration up to 19 days of age. From 19 up to 45 days of age the feed was changed to the experimental diets. A total of 264 ross meat type chicks were used, 33 chicks in each treatment in three replicates. Eight experimental diets were formulated and used. The control diet contained soybean meal at a level of 20 percent and three mixtures (A, B and C) of sunflower meal (solvent extracted) and sunflower seed were used in place of soybean meal in other experimental diets. Mixtures A and B were used at levels of 5, 10 or 15 percent in the diet, but mixture C was used at a level of 10 percent. The criteria of response were weekly chick body weight, growth rate, body weight gain, feed consumption, feed conversion and a slaughter test at the end of the experiment. The results are summarized as follows: regarding the whole period (from 19-45 days of age) no significant differences were found among treatments in body weight, growth rate, body weight gain, feed consumption and feed conversion. Although significant differences were observed among treatments in giblets percentage, differences in other carcass components and abdominal fat percentage were not significant. Generally, it can be concluded that soybean meal could be replaced with sunflower meal (solvent extracted) supplemented with lysine, methionine and energy at up to 75 percent in grower and finisher diets (15 percent from the diet) for broiler chicks without adverse effects on broiler performance or carcass traits
