Basidiomes of an Armillaria (HUA93110) were collected in the fall of 1993 from the Tomakomai Experimental Forest of Hokkaido University, Tomakomai, Hokkaido. The basidiomes occurred on the decaying roots of a fallen Acer mono Maxim. in a broad-leaved forest. The fungus was identified as Armillaria mellea (Vahl: Fr.) Kummer S. S. based on microscopical characteristics of the basidiome and the results of mating tests with haploid testes of it from North america. Its sexual behavior (not showing any discernible mating reaction in the self-cross) and cultural characteristics of monosporous isolates (colonies at first fluffy in appearance but becoming crustose) of the Japanese form apparently are different from those of the European and North American forms, but are very similar to those of the African form
