[Application of the latest genetic methods in the selection of lilies]
1997
Balode, A. (Latvian University of Agriculture, Jelgava (Latvia). Horticulture Dept.)
The genus "Lilium" includes 85 species classified into 7 sections. The species of different sections do not cross in nature. To obtain valuable hybrids interspecific crosses are made artificially. The latest crossing methods requiring a shorter time from pollination to a new species compared with the classical methods are described. Interspecific crosses made in the given research between Asiatic, Trumpet and Oriental hybrid lilie with various numbers of chromosomes are discussed. The resulting data are presented in a table showing crossed species, number of chromosomes and number of bulblets in vitro using distant hybridization.
