[Leaching of plant nutrients with drain water discharge]

The leaching of nutrients causes losses to agriculture and may cause environmental pollution. Preliminary results from monitoring sites in Latvia showed that the total phosphours losses varied between 0.07 and 0.56 kg/ha per year, but total nitrogen - 6.6 to 21.7 kg/ha. In order to investigate the influence of different fertilization treatments on nutrient leaching, a special drainage field has been established in spring 1996. It consists of 16 separate drained plots, the discharge of which will be measured and analysed.
