[Development and implementation of a three-level agricultural land monitoring system]

The aim of the research was to create and verify the new system and to ensure the scientific supervision of it in 1994-1996. The Agricultural Land Monitoring program is designed as informative system, which includes long term observation regarding anthropogenic impact on agricultural land, data acquisition, processing, analysis, storage, as well as prognosis. It is focused to promote land conservation, sustainable and economically reasonable use of it. These objectives, principles and financing framework of agricultural land monitoring is fixed by three legislative acts. Based on these legislative acts 5 executive regulations and methods have been worked out. The agricultural land monitoring is designed as a three level integrated system which will run simultaneously. In 1994-1996 in cooperation with the Cadastre Centre of the State Land Service 189 sample farms were selected for monitoring the use of agricultural land. The obtained results have been processed and show that sample farms represent the total area of agricultural land of Latvia, and could be used for the next steps of monitoring.
