Importance of carbohydrates in rice (Oryza sativa L.) seeds exposed to anoxia

Carbohydrates content increased with increasing seed weight and with decreasing portion of endosperm removed. Weight of the seed was highly correlated to its specific gravity and carbohydrate content. The use of specific gravity as criterion offers a practical screening method in the field for obtaining seeds with greater weight and carbohydrate content. Anoxia was imposed by incubating germinated seeds in stagnant deoxygenated agar solution. Seed starch content prior to anoxia was highly correlated to coleoptile length during anoxia and plant survival after anoxia. Exogenous glucose feeding during anoxia of half (50 percent endosperm removed) increased survival and plant height after anoxia. The better seedling growth during anoxia and after anoxia in heavier seeds, more dense seeds, and half seeds supplied with glucose during anoxia clearly demonstrates the importance of carbohydrates prior to anoxia in rice seeds exposed to anoxia
