Influence of wounding, Aspergillus flavus inoculum and insecticide application on aflatoxin contamination of corn in the Philippines

In the dry season crop, kernel infection and aflatoxin content of seeds were consistently higher with wounding and these differences were often statistically significant (P=0.05). Kernel infection increased when wounding and fungus applications were combined as compared to wounded treatment alone. However, in treatments without wounds, kernel infection did not significantly increase with fungus application. In the wet season crop, extensive kernel rot occurred particularly in wounded treatments. However, most infection was caused by Fusarium moniliforme. Lower kernel infection by Aspergillus flavus occurred in the wet season than in the dry season, and often both wounding and fungus applications did not significantly increase either kernel infection by A. flavus or aflatoxin content. Results of the present study suggest that efforts in reducing aflatoxin contamination of corn in the Philippines should be directed towards minimizing wounding during crop development
