A field experiment was conducted in Baybay, Leyte [Philippines] to evaluate the influence of Gmelina arborea in contour hedgerows under lateral branch pruning on the yield performance of corn and upland rice and soil fertility. Pruning of G. arborea hedgerows resulted to three-fold increment in grain yield of upland rice in full alley over that obtained in the unpruned treatment. On field area basis, the control produced significantly higher grain yield than those at the pruned and unpruned treatments. Yield performance of corn in the alley with G. arborea in contour hedgerows was generally poor. Soil fertility was not affected by branch pruning scheme. Soil pH, P, and K increased with time, regardless of the pruning scheme and upland crops used in the alley. Percent OM decreased after upland rice and increased after corn crop. Percent N was reduced with time. Al concentration in the soil did not change after rice but significantly decreased after corn cropping. Soil pH decreased with increased distance from the hedgerows, while P was increased. No change was observed in percent OM and N
