Effect of plant growth regulators on the growth and development of wheat genotypes

The study was conducted at College Farm, University College of North Wales, Bangor. This study comprised of three winter varieties such as Amrada, Hobbit and Norman and three spring varieties such as Wembley, Lu26S and Alexandaria were tested under stress of three different growth regulators including GA3, CCC and BAP along with untreated control in two years experiments. The results revealed that variety had significant effects on rates and durations of leaf appearance and final leaf number as well as leaf and spikelet initiation. In both years, winter varieties had slower rates and longer durations for leaves and spikelets. The growth regulator gibberellic acid resulted in a small increase in number of leaves due to increased duration of leaf appearance in both years. Whilst CCC and BAP were both applied too late to affect leaf and spikelet number. The effects of variety on grain growth were significant. The winter varieties had faster rate, but shorter duration of grain growth than spring. The effects of growth regulator, on grain growth were inconsistent. CCC produced smaller grains due to slower grain growth rate.
