Preventive methodology for the control of subterranean termites attacking mango plantations (Mangifera indica L.) by indigenous pesticides (Phase-1)

Different kinds of termite species occurring in Pakistan damage mango plantations (Mangifera indica L.), starting right from the sowing stages till flowering and fruiting in Sindh region of Pakistan. Old mango trees are also found to be susceptible to termite attack, resulting tremendous decline in mango fruits yield annually in our country. Young plants are equally infested by some soil-inhabiting phytophagous nematodes. Seed dressing with 0.6% Tenekil (A polychlorinated hydrocarbon developed and formulated at PCSIR Laboratories Complex, Karachi) was found to be effective for the control of termites during the course of germination in the mango growing areas, and its booster dose at the standard rate of three litres per acre prevented both the termites and nematodes infestations upto nine months. Although DDT and BHC used as standard pesticides with the same concentration and methodology also exhibited the same results for the control of termites, yet moderate infestation of nematodes was noted after seven months.
