Correlation and path coefficient analysis in upland cotton

Association analysis in F2 - generation in G. hirsutum L. revealed that low phenotypic correlation coefficients could result due to modifying effect of environment on the association of the characters at the genetic level. Highest positive and significant Value of genotypic correlation coefficient was observed among seed index and lint index (0.971) followed by number of bolls/plant and yield of seed cotton/Plant (0.769). Genetic correlation coefficient between boll weight and yield of seed cotton (0.592) was also impressive. The almost absence of genetic correlation between number of bolls and boll weight was encouraging. Seed index and lint index were also found to be positively and significantly correlated with seed cotton yield. Number of bolls and boll weight had high direct positive effects towards yield of seed cotton. Most of the characters studied effected the yield of seed cotton positively through boll weight and up to some extent via number of bolls.
