Sources of resistance to major insect-borne viral diseases of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata)

Field and greenhouse evaluations of germplasm collection, breeding lines, and traditional varieties were done to identify sources of resistance to four major insect-borne viral diseases of cowpea namely: cowpea little leaf, cowpea mosaic, cowpea aphid-borne mosaic. Thirty one and 90 entries out of 599 cowpea lines/accessions screened against cowpea little leaf exhibited resistance and moderate resistance, respectively. Of the 420 entries evaluated for resistance to cowpea mosaic, 7 symptomless and 10 moderately resistant entries were selected. Thirty-seven out ot 146 entries of cowpea exhibited resistance to cowpea aphid-borne mosaic. Eight out of 20 entries screened for resistance to pole sitao mosaic virus remained symptomless until harvest
