Pureline selection was used to develop new lines from genetically variable population of old and introduced varieties. Progeny rows from individual plant selections were done. Promising lines were compared with each other and the parent variety and the highest yielding lines were selected as purelines. Nine Maligaya Special (MS) lines were isolated from six introduced and old varieties. These lines are aromatic and can be grown favorably in the dry season. MS1 was selected from KDML 105, MS2 from Basmati 370, MS3, MS4, and MS5 from Kasturi, MS6 from Pandan, MS7 and MS8 from IR841 and MS9 from Guandong. Yields ranged from 3.57 to 7.65 t/ha, maturities from 111 to 128 days, plant height from 83-121 cm and number of reproductive tillers from 12-28. Grain quality evaluation also indicated variation in milling potentials, physical attributes, physicochemical characteristics and sensory qualities. In the overall sensory qualities, MS6 was rated as the most excellent in taste and overall acceptability while MS7 as the least acceptable
