Ten varieties/advanced lines (CIM70, FH87, MNH93, NIAB86, P-2/2, P-43/13, P- 43/51-2, P-43/60, S-9/1 and S-20) were tested for presence of bio-chemical resistance against jassid, Amrasca devastans (Dist.) and thrips, Thrips tabaci (Lind.) during 1992 at NIAB, Faisalabad. Significant differences existed among varieties regarding insect pest population and all bio-chemical plant factors studied. CIM70 and FH87 showed maximum jassid (1.69/leaf) and thrips (5.34/leaf) population. P-43/60 and S20 possessed minimum jassid (0.71/leaf) and thrips (2.67/leaf) population. Total minerals and calcium showed significant effects on both insects with variant response. Reducing sugars played significant and positive role for jassid. Thrips population was significantly affected by nitrogen, protein, total lipids and manganese with positive response and zinc with negative response.
