Allelopathic suppression of wheat and maize seedling growth by Imperata cylindrica (Linn.) P. Beauv.

Imperata cylindrica (Linn.) P. Beauv. is a common perennial aggressive weed of wheat, maize and other crops of Pakistan. Aqueous extracts obtained by socking or boiling fresh and dried plant parts significantly reduced early growth of seedlings of wheat and maize in Laboratory. Similarly, litter, incorporated plant mulch, natural rain leachates and soil beneath Imperata significantly retarded radicle and plumule growth and moisture contents of both the test species. Roots were more inhibitory than other parts. Caffeic, ferulic, p-Oh-benzoic, p-coumaric, vanillic and chlorogenic acids were identified as some of the phytotoxins from aqueous extracts and rain leachates.
