Double haploid variability associated with anther culture of rice was evaluated using a traditional variety, Tuhaw, as anther source. The origin of variation was analyzed by partitioning the variability into among regenerants and between tillers/regenerants. Among regenerants, significant variation was observed in plant height. Variation between tillers/regenerants was found for days to heading and grain length. Six and five regenerants out of 22 had doubled haploid lines differing significantly from one anther in days to heading and grain length, respectively. The variation among regenerants could be due to mutations that may have occurred during callus initiation, proliferation and/or organogenesis
