Studies in Olsztyn Lakeland showed that in respect of N concentration the surface water may be ranged as follows: drainage outflows land reclamation ditches small post-glacial lakes streams forest streams sources. Agricultural use of land increases N content in surface water. Nitrate content rises mainly in drainage water, in ditches - organic N while the ammonium N in small post-glacial lakes. The main sources of ditch water pollution are rural settlements and farms, nitrate content is affected mostly by sub-surface flow. At oxygen deficit the nitrites may occur in water as a result of organic pollution inflow or anaerobic transformations (small post-glacial lakes in winter)
