In 10-year experiment began in 1987 on the permanent highland meadow (400 m altitude) different rates of N fertilization (0, 80, 160, 240, 320 kg/ha) were applied at 100 kg P2O5 and 120 kg K2O per ha. The yields of total protein in herbage systematically increased with the nitrogen application at significant differences among the used doses. Increased N fertilizing rates negatively affected the contents of P, K, Ca, at positive effects on Mg, Na, total and nitrate N contents. The nitrate N content in hay yields did not exceed the toxic level
