The consolidation of the economic recovery after the severe slump experienced in all the major industrialized countries at the early '90s, has exhibited different characteristics and intensity for the food industry as compared with other production sectors. The combination of structural elements (the food industry being an anticyclical sector which supplies staple commodities), of long-term dynamics (development of large scale distribution, rationalization of the production structure, increase in exports, increased internationalization) and of factors more purely related to the economic trend (lira depreciation) have, on one hand, emphasized the structural limits of the food sector and, on the other hand, have offered the operators of the sector new possibilities. Such limits and opportunities will soon change the competition scenario of the domestic food industry and thus the concrete possibility of beginning a renewed growth stage.
