Environmental pollution as a result of socio-economic development of our country, irrespective of its form of manifestation, is a major problem requiring measures for the elimination or diminishing of unfavourable consequences. Our studies were carried out during 1988 - 1990 in the area, considered as having the highest pollution degree, along Slatina aluminium works. Soil samples were collected from 10 characteristic places (the 11 th one being the control, at a distance of about 5 km., where the pollution effect was not manifested); the soil samples were collected from two depth levels: 0-20 cm. and 20-40 cm. The sulphur soil content, although higher than in 1989, rarely went beyond the accepted limit of ICPA, in the three sample collecting stages. Soils in Slatina industrial zone are critically polluted with fluorine which is, again in 1990 (as it was first noticed in 1989) more than 100 times higher than the unpolluted soils from the unaffected (control) zone. A marked variation of microbiological activity was also seen from one stage to the next one, depending on the soil pollution degree.
