Management of the brown bear in Slovenia

In Slovenia only 30 to 40 bears survived at the beginning of the 20th century, but at present their number has increased to 280 - 300. Average killing is 43 animals annually. Maximum weight of bear is 320 kg. The planned killing includes 50 % of animals with weight to 100 kg (obligatory), 25 % of animals to 150 kg and 25 % over 150 kg. Shooting is done only from a high shooting stand from 1 October to 30 April. Parturient females are protected. Bears live mostly in south-eastern Slovenia on an area of about 30,000 square km. Cases of humans wounded by bears are increasing. Three cases of killing of human by bears were reported (in 1964, 1969 and 1987). Bears are getting used in an undesirable way to carcasses which are laid out for them intentionally on places numbering approximately one for each 50 square km. Damage caused to sheep is increasing as well. The bear population in Slovenia is being systematically strengthened by the immigration of bears from Croatia and Bosnia
