Variability of the content of certain elements in the antler substance of roe and red deer from three regions of Slovakia

The content of Pb, Ca, P, Mg, Cu, Yn, Mn, Fe, and ash in 60 antlers of roebuck and 78 antlers of red deer from three regions of Slovakia was studied, including Na and K in the antlers of roebuck. The material was divided by populations, before 1945 and after 1945. Detailed differences between species (caused mainly by the different botanical spectrum of food) are given in Table 1. A survey of the mineral structure of red deer antlers by locality and chronological changes is shown in Tab. 2, and the same data for roebuck antlers in Tab. 3. In roebuck antlers a relatively higher proportion of certain elements, mainly Pb, Ca, Mg and ash, but a lower proportion of Fe was determined than in the antlers of red deer. There are indications that the proportion of P, Cu and Zn in the latter is higher as well. The differences in the mineral structure of antler substance by orographic units and regions are considerable and depend on their contents in the food with regard to the soil and geological substrata as well as on the degree of anthropogenic pollution from both local sources and long-distance transfer. Individual variability by locality even in the same region is considerable, being greater for roebuck (territoriality) than for red deer. The greatest is for the content of Pb as well as Mn, Fe, Cu. The content of Pb in antler substance in Slovakia has a decreasing trend when compared to the past. The information presented can be used in preparing prescriptions of mineral feeding supplements for game. Antlers are also well suited for the monitoring (and retrospectively) of chemical pollution of the environment
