Hybridization of the European aspen and White poplars

Progenies of selected plus trees of indigenous aspen (Populus tremula L.) and white poplar (Populus alba) originating from Prievidza and Muran (central Slovakia), and Dunajska Streda and Palarikovo (the Danube basin), respectively, exhibit growth heterosis from among trees obtained during the first hybridization experiment performed from 1973-1975. Besides these parent trees, also pollen of Populus tremuloides MICHX. and Populus grandidentata MICHX. from Canada was utilized in the controlled pollination. Hybrids were planted in Gabcikovo (southernmost Slovakia, the Danube lowlands) at a spacing of 5x5 m. Biometric characteristics of 14 year old hybrids are presented in the tables. Mean heights and d sub(13) of the best growing families (white poplars from Samorin, forest enterprise Dunajska Streda, as mother trees, and aspen from Bojnice, forest enterprise Prievidza, as fathers), were 20.3-24.8 (h sub(max)=26.5 m) and 29.5 -32.8 cm (d sub(13)max=39.5 cm). Hybrid vigor of single individuals contributes to the high individual variability and makes possible the application of individual selection also within average or even below average hybrid families. Growth of hybrids with fathers Populus grandidentata and Populus tremuloides is apparently slow (mean height 14.25 - 17.1 m).
