Density and size of stomata of apple trees growing under irrigated and non-irrigated conditions

Variation in stomatal density (number of stomata per square m) and size (length, width) were determined in four groups of six-year-old apple trees, differing in irrigation treatments. Mean stomatal density increased in the following sequence: permanently irrigated (PI) - irrigated in spring (ISP) - irrigated in summer (ISM) - non irrigated (NI), the lowest being in PI and the highest in NI. The differences in stomatal size were not statistically significant, except ISM with the largest stomata; however, the smallest stomata were found in NI. Stomatal density appears to be predominantly affected by water status of the apple trees in the period of vegetative growth in spring.
