Thesis about field study to determine the sensitivity of grain yield components of flex ear (Zea mays L.) and fixed ear corn hybrids to a range of growing conditions. Two commercial hybrids, one from each category, were grown under irrigated and non-irrigated conditions. The experimental design was a split-plot with four replications. Hybrid was the main plot and plant population density (PPD), ranching from 3.35 to 6.94 plants/m2, the subplots. The ratio of actual to potential transpiration, determined from a soil water balance model, was used to determine periods of water stress. Grain yield differences were primarily due to differences in the number of kernels per unit area and to individual kernel weight. Water deficit prior to and shortly after silking was probably the major cause of the grain yield reduction under non-irrigated conditions
