Effect of green manure, cattle manure and chemical fertilizer on growth and yield of maize (Zea mays L.) grown on Yasothon soil

Experiment was carried out at Khon Kaen University during rainy season of 1990 on Yasothon soil series with the use of maize variety Rungsit 1. The treatments used were: conrol (T1), chemical fertilizer (15-15-15) at the rate of 156.25 kg/ha plus cattle manure at the rate of 6.25 ton/ha (T2), chemical fertilizer (15-15-15) at the rate of 156.25 kg/ha plus green manure at the rate of 6.25 ton/ha (T3), chemical fertilizer (15-15-15) at the rate of 187.50 kg/ha (T4), chemical fertilizer (15-15-15) at the rate of 375 kg/ha (T5), cattle manure at the rate of 6.25 ton/ha (T6) and green manure at the rate of 6.25 ton/ha (T7). The design used was a randomized complete block with 4 replications. Total top growth and grain yields of maize were affected by fertilizer treatments, chemical fertilizer plus organic manure gave the highest values of both top growth dry weights and grain yields. Chemical fertilizer alone ranked the second. Organic manures alone ranked the third and the lowest was with the control treatment. Maximum leaf area index (L) was with the chemical fertilizer treatment. The values of L and day 49 exceeded 9 in all treatments except T1 and T7
