This paper presents the ongoing development of alternative energy sources from Borassus flabellifer L. residues which are available in Sathing Phra area-southern Thailand as a means for reducing the problems of fuelwood shortage. Fuel characteristics of selected Borassus residues, namely petiole, male and female inflorescences and male spathe, were determined for proximate analysis, sulphur content and heating value. Certain selected petiole, male and female inflorescences were determined for ultimate analysis. The physical characteristics of fuel forms were accomplished through a search of available literature and on farm survey. Assessment for their suitability as energy sources and their impacts of acid deposition, is discussed in this paper.
