The subject of this paper is the comparison of two different methods for the analysis of extremes in meteorology: classical method of the extremes theory Log-Pearson type 3 method (LPT-3) and Zelenhasic-Todorovic method (Z-T). Application of the methods is performed on meteorological droughts (rainless periods). Records of 9 meteorological stations in Backa, the Province of Vojvodina (Yugoslavia) were used. Numerical calculations are carried out by appropriate computer programs for Z-T method and LPT-3 method. Good agreement is found between the theoretical and empirical distribution functions for both methods, which was confirmed by using statistical tests. On the basis of the applied statistical tests and having in mind certain theoretical advantages of the Z-T method, it could be concluded that this method is better than the LPT-3 method for the analysis of extreme rainless period.
