The effect of organic fertilizers and mineral fertilizers with different nitrogen levels on sugar beet yields

A stationary field trial was established. Soil mineral N content was determined to have increased in treatments with organic fertilizers. Total N content was the highest over the period of intensive growth, after which it kept decreasing until the end of the growing season. The removal of N by the root and crown peaked at the end of the growing season and that by the leaf mass by the end of July. The removal of potassium was much greater than that of N, whereas root yields were much higher in treatments with organic fertilizers than in those with NPK. In 1993 root yield was on an increase up to the N rate of 200 kg/ha and in 1994 up to 100 kg N/ha. The organic fertilizers increased the level of deleterious substances in the root. In 1994 the yield of refined sugar was the highest in the treatment with manure + NPK and in 1993 in that with harvest residues + liquid manure + NPK.
