Importance of soil properties for the content of photosynthetic pigments in the leaves of poplar clones

The content of chlorophyll pigments a and b and that of carotenoids were investigated on samples of the leaves of poplar clone rooted cuttings from a field experiment on three types of soil, i.e., humofluvisol, fluvisol f. loamy, and fluvisol f. sandy. The experiment involved clones of the following taxa: autochthonous black poplar (Populus nigra and Populus nigra "italica"), Euramerican poplar (Populus x euramericana) and eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides). The results showed that the clone reaction to soil types was different, and that pigment synthesis depended more on type of soil than on genotype. The greatest content of chlorophyll pigments and carotenoids resulted in poplar growth on fluvisol f. loamy. Their content was lower on fluvisol f. sandy and lowest on humofluvisol. The investigated poplar clones are characterized by a high adaptive value.
