The effect of preservatives on the viscosity, surface charge and pH value of two different carboxymethylcellulose (CMS) gels, 24 hours after preparation and after 30 days of storage, has been investigated. All investigated gels had pseudoplastic properties, with or without preservatives. The viscosity of unpreserved samples generally increases with time, owing to the subsequent hidratation of CMC (carboxymethylcellulose) molecules. The preservatives used showed different effect on viscosity and zeta potential changes of freshly prepared gels, depending on specific preservative used and on origin of CMS (carboxymethylcellulose).
