The Belgium soil map: a basis for a Geographical Information System for rural planning | La carte des sols de la Belgique: base d'un systeme d'information geographique pour l'amenagement et la gestion de l'espace rural
1998
Engels, P.
Prior to its introduction in a GIS, the soil map of Belgium was interpreted according to field observations supported by laboratory analyses of representative samples. The integration of appropriate information on soils (lithology, geomorphological context, physico-chemical properties) enables the defining of true land units and thereby the building of a LandIS. This system constitutes an exhaustive geo-referenced data base for the management of rural areas. Concrete applications are presented on this issue, namely: the use of LandIS for an accurate management of agricultural and forest plots, contribution to personalised fertilization advice by taking into account the physico-chemical parameters related to texture, suggestions for enhancing the environmental aspect of marginal areas, detailed scale characterization of soils and farming practices for the protection of natural resources, the compilation of a data bank of didactic and scientific vocation on rural areas
