Selecron 720 EC belongs to organophosphorous group of insecticides, it is one of the most commonly used compound in Egypt. The extensive application and the mishandling in the use of Selecron caused pollution to environment of both human and domestic animals. The toxic action of Selecron on the white rat Rattus novergicus (mammalian system) was studied. The results obtained could be summarised as follows: the LD50 of Selecron was determined in order to choose suitable subchronic dose for further experiments. The estimate LD50 of Selecron (formulated product) was 356 more or less 0.0438 mg per kg. b.wt. Selecron was administered orally to pregnant female at two doses: 1/10 (35.6 mg per kg b.wt.) and 1/20 (17.8 mg per kg b.wt.) of the LD50 was applied 5 times started from 8th to 12th of the gestation period. It was found that Selecron has a teratogenic representing in skeletal and visceral anomalies. These anomalies are missing of cleft palate, hypoplasia of the heart and liver, incomplete ossification of the skull bones, absence of sternrae, absence of coccygeal vertebrae and absence of limbs bones. Hence, these findings must be considered in the hygiene standardisation of this compound.
