A method for rapid quasi-static testing of the mechanical properties of plant stalks

The present report presents a quasi-static method for the testing of mechanical properties of plant stalks compressed between two plates. The values obtained can be considered as material constants. Studies conducted on the stalks of winter rape indicate that the values provide full information on the mechanical properties of the stalks, comparable to the relative strain work required to shear a stalk in a dynamic test. The main advantage of the method proposed is its rapidity, as well as its realizability by means of generally available strength testing machines.
