Comparison of methods for describing the vegetation period of maize

Between 1991 and 1993 experiments were carried at the Pannon Agricultural University, Mosonmagyarovar, Hungary, in order to study the formation of the maximum thousand kernel mass as a possible indicator of physiological maturity. The drying down rate was measured, and the number of days which elapsed to the various phenological phases were calculated, together with the heat unit values. In the experiment 3 different planting dates and 21 hybrids were used. The first parameters studied for the determination of relative maturity were the number of days and the heat unit values to 50 percent female flowering. The results show that there is a much higher variation in the number of days, while the heat unit values are more exact and more suitable for the prediction of relative maturity. The major goal of the experiment was to investigate the time required for the formation of full dry weight and the corresponding number of days and heat unit values. The number of days and heat unit values from 50 percent flowering to maximum dry weight were also determined. As a result of the measurements it can be established that the heat unit values also provide a more exact prediction of the date of this phenological phase
