Establishment and fertilization of a salt-grass-redtop grassland under irrigated conditions on a solonchak-solonetz saline soil
1996
Harmati, I. (Gabonatermesztesi Kutatoint. Szeged (Hungary))
On a calcareous solonchak-solonetz soil with a relatively thin profile in the region between the Rivers Danube and Tisza (Hungary), a grassland with Festuca pseudovina as the dominant species was ploughed up and sown with a salt tolerant salt-grass-redtop mixture, which was irrigated with water from the Danube using the flood-flow method. For a period of 13 years studies were made on the joint effect of NP fertilisers and irrigation on the species composition and hay yield of the grass as a function of continual changes in the saline properties and nutrient content of the soil. The possibility of maintaining a high-yielding grassland in the course of these changes was also examined
