Diagnosis of chronic lung diseases with obstruction in horses and the possibilities of treatment

Since domestication, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has plaqued horses and their owners. In temperate climates, horses are stabled during a long period and are fed hay that is often poorly cured due to humid summers. In the last several years, our knowledge about the pathogenesis of COPD improved significantly and are recently reviewed this subject in detail. The author emphasize the diagnosis and treatment of COPD. The clinical presentation of COPD varies the severity of the condition. Animals with subclinical or mild COPD may have chronic coughing but have few abnormal findings on auscultation or endoscopy of the tracheobronchial tree. As the disease progresses, breath sounds increase, there is an increase in tracheobronchial secretions that may contain an increased number of neutrophils, cough is more frequent, and horses become increasingly intolerant of exercise. COPD is characterized by bronchiolitis, it is an allergic condition caused by exposure of predisposed animals to antigens in their enviroment, and the disease is characterized by inflammation and bronchospasm. Therefore, the goals of therapy should be allergen avoidance, antiinflammatory therapy, and the prevention of bronchospasm
