The limited and moderate rainfall areas (250-450mm) cover about 1.5 million hectares of Northern Iraq.This region suffers from irregular rainfall and the occurrance of drought especially during heading and maturity time (March to May). The local landrace "Saberbeg" is widely grown in the Northern part of Iraq for its drought tolerance and good bread making. However, it is a low yielder (200-800 kg/ha) and suffers from lodging and leaf rust susceptibility
