Advances in fertilizer use in Kenyan tea industry

The increase in the tea yields from the 1000 kg Mt/ha mark to 2000 and above was initially attributed mainly to the introduction of NPKS fertilizer. However, an upward trends in the yields ha6 remained even when fertilizers without phosphorus and potassium are used. Non-manual weeding and non removal of prunings and good management contributed a lot to the increased yields. Even with the current high yields, response to phosphorus and potassium has been absent or very low. But, use of compound nitrogen fertilizers containing phosphorus and potassium is recommended. The economic rates of nitrogen appear to be below the agronomic optimum such that it would be un-economical to apply nitrogen rates above 280 kg N/ha/year.
