Lycopersicon species are classified based on sucrose accumulation in mature fruits. Eulycopersicon contains almost no sucrose, while sucrose accounts for a large part of total sugar in Eriopersicons. From the sugar analysis of the back-crossed progenies of interspecific hybrids (tomato x L. pennellii) to tomato, sucrose-accumulating trait was estimated to be conferred by a comparatively smaller number of genes with additive effects on the sucrose content
