Estimation of genetic trend in racing time of Thoroughbred horse in Japan
1996
Oki, H. (Japan Racing Association, Tokyo. Equine Research Inst.) | Sasaki, Y.
The breeding value for racing time of the Thoroughbred horse in Japan was predicted by the best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) and the genetic trend was estimated. The data used were records of the 1600m race on turf and dirt tracks which were collected by the Japan Racing Association from 1975 to 1993. Breeding values were evaluated by best linear unbiased prediction with animal model using MTDFREML program. Genetic trend in racing time was estimated as the linear regression of average breeding values of horses born in each year on their birth year. The negative regression coefficient which means improvement of racing performance was recognized in the records taken on both turf and dirt tracks. the differences in genetic trend of racing time were observed in horses in four different pedigree groups: domestic sire and dam, domestic sire and foreign sire, foreign sire and domestic dam, and foreign sire and dam. The genetic improvement in the horses produced by foreign-dam and foreign-sire was larger than the horses produced by the other combinations on truf track
