The chemical forms of Zn, Mn and Cu in soils of Sugadaira-kougen [Japan]

In the present paper, the chemical forms of Zn, Mn and Cu in soils of Sugadaira-Kougen were studied in detail using a sequential extraction method. The results obtained are summarized as follows. (1) the Zn content in the residual fraction of soils was 60-90% of the total Zn. The percentage of Zn in the organic matter fraction could be arranged in the order upland grassland forest (bare land) soil. The percentage of Zn in the exchangeable fraction was less than 3%. (2) About 50% of Mn was present in the residual fraction but the percentage of the Fe oxide fraction was 30-65% in the forest (bare land) soils, and was more than two times higher than in the upland or grassland soils. There was a significant correlation between the Mn concentration of the organic matter fraction and the total carbon content in each soil (r=0.87, n=11). The Mn value in the exchangeable fraction was 5-9% lower than that in each fraction. (3) In the case of the forms of copper, the percentage of the organic matter fraction was high in upland soils but that of the residual fraction was the highest in the forest (bare land) soil. The mean value of Cu associated with the organic matter fraction was 40% in the upland soils and about 25% in the grassland soil, but it could not be estimated in the forest (bare land) soils. The Cu percentage of 0.5% in the exchangeable fraction was consistently lower in each regime
