Characteristics of oat variety "Laima"

Oat variety "Laima" (Avena sativa, var.aurea) has been created in the Stende State Plant Breeding and Research Station during 1982-1992. Methods of breeding - hybridization and individual selection of plants, authors of variety: P.Bulbiks, M. Gruntina et al. Variety "Laima" is characterized by a high and stable grain yield under different climatic conditions. The variety is resistant to oats crown leaf rust. The yield of grains was 3.3-3.9 t.haE-1 in official testing trials (1992-1995). It was higher by 0.14-0.26 t.haE-1 as compared to the standard variety "Selma". In 1996 the variety "Laima" was included in the Recommended list of varieties grown in Latvia. Since 1997 it is recognized as the standard variety in the State official variety trials. In 1997 "Laima" occupied 16% from the total oat sowing area in Latvia (by the State seed inspection data).
