DNA fingerprints of farmers' varieties collected in 3 towns of Cagayan [Philippines] representing irrigated lowland, rainfed and upland ecosystems were analyzed using 11 microsatellite markers with 69 alleles. Information on diversity of varieties helps determine the "on-farm" conservation strategies that may be adapted. Panicle samples of 114 samples - 60 Philippine traditional and 40 modern varieties were collected from farmers' field in 5 towns in Cagayan. Several samples were collected from 18 varieties in different farmers' field. The varieties with the most number of samples are IR66 (13 samples) and Biniding (IR68) (11 samples). Molecular marker analysis indicate that many of the samples with the same variety name like Biniding (IR68) and IR66 have different microsatellite allelic composition. However, some sample with different variety name also have similar microsatellite allelic compositions. Very few of the samples collected in the farmers' field with the same name like Wagwag, Imelda and IR42 have very similar allelic compositions. These results indicate a high degree of out-crossing of farmers varieties and the misnaming of several varieties as well as the genetic diversity of farmers' collection
