Marnix Agricultural Development Corporation (MADC), the Philippines' pioneer company to venture into certified potato seed production

Out of concern for the country's potato industry whose major problem is the scarcity of certified seeds, and to explore the vast potential for potato seed tuber production (8,600 mt required per year), enterprising businessmen, R. Tan (1993) and W.P.Uy (1995), agreed to contribute capital while UP Los Banos [Philippines] scientist, RC Barba and LF Patena, their technical expertise to venture into potato certified seed production via in vitro, greenhouse and field tuberization. The venture was set up with the support of a team of capable and dedicated technical staff. Starting in June 1993 when the agreement was formalized and after infusing considerable time, expense and technical modifications, the group has completed several successful cycles of laboratory, greenhouse and field production. The present batch of seed tubers are reserved for Universal Robina Corporation (URC) and some cooperators and subsequent batches to all interested growers. Average yield is about 0.4-0.5 kg/plant. Present target clones are Granola (general use), Atlantic (chips), Wisconsin (French fries), ASN from IPB, UPLB-CA [Institute of Plant Breeding, University of the Philippines Los Banos-College of Agriculture, College, Laguna, Philippines], and the two lowland selections from MMSU [Mariano Marcos State University], Batac, Ilocos Norte [Philippines]. Representatives of BPI [Bureau of Plant Industry], DA [Department of Agriculture], PCARRD [Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development, Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] and ASPRAD (formerly SAPPRAD) were pleased with the field visit in Bukidnon, on 21 Nov 1996 and encouraged the company to continue production while awaiting accreditation as potato seed growers from the Department of Agriculture
