Mushroom (Volvariella volvaceae) production in corn cobs

Mushroom is a good source of food and income which can be easily produced using farm wastes. Traditionally, mushrooms are produced in banana leaves and rice straws. The use of these materials, however, is labor intensive since banana leaves need to be chopped and like rice straws, it must be tied in bundles before piling. Also, rice straws are irritating to skin. Corn cobs can replace these materials. The use of corn cobs is not laborious since it can be easily gathered, transported and piled for mushroom production. A 20 kilogram corn cobs can be replaced in a pen with a dimension of 2 feet wide, 4 feet long and 0.5 feet high. Yield can be increased to 75 percent when the substrate is applied with urea fertilizer and brown sugar. Likewise, more number of mushroom with bigger sizes can be obtained in corn cobs than in banana leaves. Beddings can be used for 2 croppings with similar yield as in the first harvest
