Non-aerated hydroponic culture of pansit-pansitan (Peperomia pellucida L.)

Preliminary experiment showed that pansit-pansitan (a medicinal plant known as anti-gout) plants were able to grow normally in non-aerated hydroponic culture. Metal analyses (Pb and Cd) revealed that pansit-pansitan plants grown in nutrient solution had lower Pb and Cd content than the one grown in soil. Subsequent experiments were conducted to determine the effect of varying concentrations and volumes of nutrient solution on the growth and yield of pansit-pansitan plants. Results indicated that a decrease in concentration of the nutrient solution decreased the shoot length, number of branches, fresh weight and dry weight of the plant correspondingly. Likewise, decrease in volume of the nutrient solution decreased the root and shoot length, number of branches, fresh weight and dry weight of the plant. However, changing the nutrient solution in the lower volume treatment after sometime increased the shoot length, number of branches, fresh weight and dry weight of the plant indicating a possible recovery of the plant with the provision of the exhausted nutrients in the solution
